Meet the Filmmakers: MANLY MOUNTAIN OF MEN

The soon-to-be-famous Karolin Twiddy is featured @ FILMSCHOOLFEST MUNICH online magazine. Her short film MANLY MOUNTAIN OF MEN is part of Program 8 screening of FILMSCHOOLFEST MUNICH which takes part from 19th til 20th Nov 2017 in Munich. Check dat out!

Donnerstag, 09.11.2017 | Meet the Filmmakers: MANLY MOUNTAIN OF MEN

Interview mit Regisseurin Karolin Twiddy

Regisseurin von MANLY MOUNTAIN OF MAN: Karolin Twiddy

Welche drei Worte beschreiben deinen Film MANLY MOUNTAIN OF MEN am besten?

Sexy, albern, pastellfarben.

Was glauben deine Großeltern, was dein Job ist?

Ich denke, mein Opa glaubt ich studiere Malerei bzw. Kunst.

Wenn du kein Filmemacher wärst, was wärst du dann?

Sexologin, also Paartherapeutin.

About FILMSCHOOLFEST MUNICH

“Horrorstreifen im 80er-Videokassetten-Style? Herzerwärmende Animation? Gesellschaftskritische Doku?

About MANLY MOUNTAIN OF MEN

ckollision – human plays machine plays human plays machine

To what extent does an increased focus on digital media influence the perception of my own reality? How do we filter playfully information and what is the impact of immersion on my own psyche?

Students of the School of Art and Design Kassel together with computer scientists of the University of Kassel present answers to these questions. By invitation of the 34 th Kasseler Dokumentarfilm- und Videofest they organise an exhibition where video games, interactive installations and VR experiments are presented in an artistic context.

VR-ZOETROP / Interactive Virtual Reality Experience / Developer: Filip Dippel, Max Holicki, Petra Stipetic Programmer: Peter Müller

The hand that draws explores materials on a haptic level while it is directly linked to the technological interface of the future, where computer games, installation works, and virtually real experiments establish themselves as forms of creative expression. The interplay of systematic research and inventive curiosity reflects autonomous approaches of working with computers and points indirectly to the key visual of the current Dokfest.

The impulse for the organisation and selection of this year’s exhibition contributions from Kassel was given by the team of the animation class, where animation is taught as a form of artistic expression in the department of visual communication. What helps is the physical and organisational proximity to visual arts, graphic design, new media and film departments as part of the School of Art and Design Kassel.

From this base, paths open up to the wide variety of modern animation, from digital production to experimental techniques, to interactive narrative forms and transmedia dissemination.

Madagascar @ Kasseler Dokfest w/ Trickfilmklasse Kassel

The Trickfilmklasse Kassel presents in cooperation with  Kasseler Dokfest the film program:

Madagaskar begegnen 4 – Entwicklung (Meeting Madagascar 4 – development)

Jeux d’enfants – Gilde Razafitsihadinoina – Dokumentation – Madagascar – 2017 – 24:27 – Malagasy/UT Englisch

It is the fourth season of the international collaboration between the madagascan film festival Recontres du Film Court (RFC), the Kasseler Dokfest and the Trickfilmklasse Kassel.  If one opens the catalogues of 2014/15/16, he or she might have read the introductory paragraphs about the origins of the madagascan cinema,  its decline and its new invention about 10 years ago. One will discover information about Laza, the filmmaker and producer who has returned to his homeland, recovering only abandoned echos of the film landscape that he knew and decided to found a film festival. The RFC was designed to provide a platform for a new generation of madagascan filmmakers for future development.

Them & Us – Lawrence Agbetsise – Dokumentation – Ghana – 2016 – 13:52 – Englisch/UT Englisch

Since then the festival and its program is constantly changing. The RFC developed from a two-day event which screened regional and national films only, to a international event that lasts 10 days, welcomes over 20k visitors in this period, screens several hundred films and receives film entries from the whole continent (Africa).

I want to make a movie – Nathaniela R. Randrianomearisoa – Experimentaldokumentation – Madagaskar – 2016 – 7:27 – Malagasy/UT
Englisch

The program starts with a madagascan film that perfectly represents the emotions of a young generation of african filmmakers: “I want to make a movie” by Nathaniela R. Randrianomearisoa is equally surreal as technically flawed. Nonetheless it demonstrates the need to get a camera and tell a story. In the spirit of development the program continues with four productions from various african countries. Each of them was shown in the contest of the RFC. In this sense the meeting with Madagascar is really a meeting with the whole african continent.

An amateur without resources and no financing searches for an opportunity.

Jeux d’enfants – Gilde Razafitsihadinoina – Dokumentation – Madagaskar – 2017 – 24:27 – Malagasy/UT Englisch
In the age of VR and insecruity madagascan children have preserved their creativity and happiness.

L’absence – Hawa Aliou N’Diaye – Dokumentation – Mali/Senegal – 2016 – 8:42 – Französisch/UT Englisch
For four years my father spends his retirement in the mosque. He distants himself from his family. I almost never encounter him at home. His absense destroys my childhood.

Them & Us – Lawrence Agbetsise – Dokumentation – Ghana – 2016 – 13:52 – Englisch/UT Englisch
Imagine losing all your property, your home, your friends and relatives because of fire and water and you have to cope without  any national aid.

Opeyemi – Alvan Obichie – Dokumentation – Experimentaldokumentation – Nigeria – 2016 – 17:18 – Englisch/UT Englisch
An unaccomplishable dream, a choleric teacher, a lost mother, no shoes, no money, no hope and in the end an unpleasant gaze into the future.

About Short Break Films

Short Film Breaks is the only film festival taking place in private companies.

We started in 2013, with screenings over a three months period for the 1000 Ipsos employees in Bucharest and Brasov. Our first edition also had special events and Q&A with guests from the Romanian filmmaking industry like Tudor Giurgiu, Adrian Sitaru or Tom Wilson, among others. […]

In 2017 we added an online festival, i-Say Short Film Breaks, to our live screenings. The i-Say website and the i-Say Facebook page were the only places where the i-Say panel members watched the SFB films, online. We also opened our doors to a new range of films and filmmakers. From the total number of 2403 films received across all platforms, we accepted 118.

About »Sog« by DOK Leipzig

CATALOGUE TEXT
The creatures in a dismal apocalyptic landscape are at the mercy of the forces of nature. When the fish are stuck in the trees after a flood, things grow from bad to worse. The cries of the helpless animals infuriate the furry cave dwellers nearby. Soon nerves are frayed. Indifference turns to anger, then violence. With slightly absurd images this 3D animation tells a pointed parable about the pull of the crowd and the courage to resist it.
– Luc-Carolin Ziemann

About DOK-Leipzig

The International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film is the largest German and one of the leading international festivals for artistic documentary and animated film as well as interactive storytelling.

Founded in 1955 DOK Leipzig is the oldest documentary festival in the world, but from its first edition on animated films were part of the programme which today extends into crossmedia art. This makes Leipzig unique in the international festival landscape as well as its strict attention to artistic quality. The artistic approach is essential for the selection of multilayered works that reflect reality in its complexity and with radical subjectivity. […]

About Sticky Frames

Images that stick to one another, that diverge and converge. Images that stick to your memory like a piece of gum to your shoe.
But “sticky” means more than that: Stickiness can be tough and relentless, persevering and enduring. These adjectives describe the young animation artists of this collective. There are seven of them: Ines Christine Geißer, Kirsten Carina Geißer, Evgenia Gostrer, Theresa Grysczok, Florian Maubach, Lina Walde and Alma W.Bär.

The Sticky Frames artists affect Kassel, as a meeting point in the middle of Germany and a birthplace to ideas that reflect, recreate and touch their environment. The festival invitations and awards the artists received are many. Also the list of cities and countries, they went to, to expand their network and collect new stories, that should be told.

In their work they throw light and colors on situations that might seem trivial at first glance, but which will change your perspective about them – like the relation between a cat and a garbageman or the search for happiness out of the perspective of horses.

Wherever the Sticky Frames tour of short films stops, something starts moving, something gets off the ground. But the movement of their audiences is an interior one: They’ll be glued to their chairs.
